October 17, 2020 Data Report

Facts for today are below.  A new graph has been added showing hospital admissions for Brookings County residents by day.

Something to think about:  an increase in the number of tests being done cannot explain the increase in the number of hospital admissions that is currently being seen statewide.

The high percentage of tests that are positive among people getting tested indicates that this virus is prevalent in the community and without infected people being identified and isolated it will continue to spread and led to further hospitalizations and deaths.

Although the 7-day average number of deaths has been dropping for the last five days, it is still higher than any time before October 3rd.

Brookings

  • 46 new cases (record high for cases in one day) (total = 1,155)
  • 290 active cases (record high)
  • Test positivity using number of people tested as the denominator (7-d average) = 36%
  • 2 new hospital admissions (n = 28 people ever hospitalized, 4 currently hospitalized)
  • No new deaths (total = 2)

South Dakota

  • 806 new cases (total = 32,611; 7-d average = 666/day [record high])
  • 7,768 active cases (record high)
  • Test positivity using number of people tested as the denominator (7-d average) = 37%
  • 33 new hospital admissions (total ever hospitalized = 2,077; 7-d average = 35/day)
  • 295 people currently hospitalized (down from a high of 304 people on 10/15/20)
  • 8 new deaths (total = 315)

Protect others – wear a mask, socially distance, and get tested if you have symptoms.
