Wastewater Surveillance

Wastewater SARS-CoV-2 levels are currently low in the City of Brookings.

Updates

Brookings County (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 23% vs. 24% last week])

  • Only 18% of people 18 years of age and older in Brookings County have received the updated bivalent booster (link to data here). 
  • 9,548 total cases:  8 new cases this week vs. 15 in the previous week.  Of the new cases this past week:
    • 12% were under 20 years of age (vs. 13% in previous week)
    • 63% were 20-39 years (vs. 27% in previous week)
    • 25% were 40-59 years (vs. 20% in previous week)
    • 0% were 60 years or older (vs. 40% in previous week)
  • 257 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: 1 hospitalization posted this past week compared to 0 in the previous week. 
  • Currently, the percentage of staffed beds that are COVID-occupied in the Sioux Empire region is 2.2% (compared to 2.5% last week), and 21.2% of the total hospital beds are available (compared to 23.9% last week).
  • 67 Brookings County residents have died of COVID:  0 new deaths were reported this past week compared to 0 deaths in the previous week.

South Dakota (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 20-24.9% vs. 20-24.9% last week])

  • Only 21% of people 18 years of age and older in South Dakota have received the updated bivalent booster (link to data here). 
  • 281,008 cases: 483 new cases this week vs. 643 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
    • 17% were under 20 years of age (vs. 19% in previous week)
    • 24% were 20-39 years (vs. 22% in previous week)
    • 23% were 40-59 years (vs. 21% in previous week)
    • 36% were 60 years or older (vs. 37% in previous week)
  • 12,667 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 17 were admitted this week vs. 31 last week. Of the new hospital admissions this past week:
    • 6% were under 20 years of age (vs. 3% in previous week)
    • 6% were 20-39 years (vs. 0% in previous week)
    • 0% were 40-59 years (vs. 29% in previous week)
    • 88% were 60 years or older (vs. 68% in previous week)
  • 41 people are currently hospitalized vs. 44 last Wednesday (7 currently in the ICU vs. 7 last week).
  • Currently, the percentage of staffed beds statewide that are COVID-occupied is 1.9% (compared to 2.1% last week), and 33.2% of the total hospital beds are available (compared to 34.9% last week).
  • 3,209 South Dakotans have died from COVID:  5 new deaths reported this week vs. 4 in the previous week. Of the deaths this past week, all were aged 60 years or older.

USA

  • 106.1 million cases:  132,532 new cases this week vs. 322,138 in the previous week
  • 1.15 million total deaths:  2,090 deaths this week vs. 2,629 in the previous week

Worldwide

  • 683.5 million cases: 761,910 cases this week vs. 993,132 million in the previous week
  • 6.82 million deaths: 7,023 deaths this week vs. 8,038 in the previous week
