February 22, 2023: COVID Weekly Data Update

Today’s report is a short one, with just updates on the numbers:

Brookings County (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 34% vs. 40% last week])

  • Only 18% of people 18 years of age and older in Brookings County have received the updated bivalent booster (link to data here). 
  • 9,449 total cases:  24 new cases this week vs. 44 in the previous week.  Of the new cases this past week:
    • 21% were under 20 years of age (vs. 23% in previous week)
    • 17% were 20-39 years (vs. 48% in previous week)
    • 12% were 40-59 years (vs. 11% in previous week)
    • 50% were 60 years or older (vs. 18% in previous week)
  • 255 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: 1 hospitalization posted this past week compared to 0 in the previous week. 
  • Currently, the percentage of staffed beds that are COVID-occupied in the Sioux Empire region is 4.0% (compared to 3.8% last week), and 22.2% of the total hospital beds are available (compared to 16.8% last week).
  • 65 Brookings County residents have died of COVID:  1 new death was reported this past week compared to no deaths in the previous week.

South Dakota (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 25%+ vs. 25%+ last week])

  • Only 21% of people 18 years of age and older in South Dakota have received the updated bivalent booster (link to data here). 
  • 277,651 cases: 996 new cases this week vs. 983 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
  • 16% were under 20 years of age (vs. 16% in previous week)
  • 23% were 20-39 years (vs. 25% in previous week)
  • 24% were 40-59 years (vs. 23% in previous week)
  • 37% were 60 years or older (vs. 36% in previous week)
  • 12,498 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 40 were admitted this week vs. 41 last week. Of the new hospital admissions this past week:
    • 3% were under 20 years of age (vs. 0% in previous week)
    • 7% were 20-39 years (vs. 7% in previous week)
    • 5% were 40-59 years (vs. 7% in previous week)
    • 85% were 60 years or older (vs. 86% in previous week)
  • 75 people are currently hospitalized vs. 73 last Wednesday (12 currently in the ICU vs. 10 last week).
  • Currently, the percentage of staffed beds statewide that are COVID-occupied is 3.5% (compared to 3.4% last week), and 35.2% of the total hospital beds are available (compared to 34.4% last week).
  • 3,175 South Dakotans have died from COVID:  8 new deaths reported this week vs. 14 in the previous week.  Of the deaths reported this past week, all were in people aged 60 years of age and older.

USA

  • 105.0 million cases:  217,310 new cases this week vs. 340,511 in the previous week
  • 1.14 million total deaths:  2,580 deaths this week vs. 4,025 in the previous week

Worldwide

  • 678.9 million cases: 1.05 million cases this week vs. 1.29 million in the previous week
  • 6.79 million deaths: 8,326 deaths this week vs. 9,735 in the previous week
