January 4, 2023: COVID Weekly Data Update

Variants

XBB.1.5 is the variant that many public health officials are monitoring.  The CDC estimates the XBB.1.5 variant currently represents 41% of the COVID cases in the U.S. (see below; link).  It is the predominant variant in Region 1, which includes the states in New England, where it is estimated that 75% of the cases are this variant.  In Region 8, which includes South Dakota, it is estimated that as of December 31st, only 2% of COVID cases are the XBB.1.5 variant.  It is predicted that this variant will cause an increase in COVID cases later this winter.

This variant is more contagious than earlier omicron variants but does not appear to cause more severe disease.  Vaccines appear to remain effective at preventing severe disease and death, and Paxlovid given within the first few days of infection is also thought to be effective.

Influenza

The number of flu cases this past week decreased, which is a good sign.  Additional information on the flu in South Dakota and how to sign up to receive the weekly Epi Listserv email can be found here
