Influenza
The increase in the number of flu cases this past week slowed down a little but is still increasing. There have been 9,571 cases diagnosed this flu season, with 350 hospitalizations and 8 deaths. Brookings County (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 28% vs. 31% last week])
- Only 15.3% of people 18 years of age and older in Brookings County have received the updated bivalent booster (link to data here).
- 9,214 total cases: 11 new cases this week vs. 24 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 36% were under 20 years of age (vs. 12% in previous week)
- 27% were 20-39 years (vs. 46% in previous week)
- 0% were 40-59 years (vs. 17% in previous week)
- 36% were 60 years or older (vs. 25% in previous week)
- 247 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: no new hospitalizations posted this past week compared to 1 in the previous week.
- Currently, the percentage of staffed beds that are COVID-occupied in the Sioux Empire region is 4.2% (compared to 4.3% last week), and 31.6% of the total hospital beds are available (compared to 22.3% last week).
- 62 Brookings County residents have died of COVID: no deaths were reported this past week compared to no deaths in the previous week.
South Dakota (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 20-24% vs. 20-24% last week])
- Only 18.1% of people 18 years of age and older in South Dakota have received the updated bivalent booster (link to data here).
- 271,856 cases: 423 new cases this week vs. 624 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 15% were under 20 years of age (vs. 20% in previous week)
- 29% were 20-39 years (vs. 29% in previous week)
- 21% were 40-59 years (vs. 19% in previous week)
- 35% were 60 years or older (vs. 32% in previous week)
- 12,213 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 24 were admitted to in-state hospitals this week vs. 28 last week. Of the new hospital admissions this past week:
- 16% were under 20 years of age (vs. 11% in previous week)
- 13% were 20-39 years (vs. 3% in previous week)
- 0% were 40-59 years (vs. 11% in previous week)
- 71% were 60 years or older (vs. 75% in previous week)
- 64 people are currently hospitalized vs. 83 last Wednesday (6 currently in the ICU vs. 6 last week).
- Currently, the percentage of staffed beds statewide that are COVID-occupied is 3.1% (compared to 3.7% last week), and 39.1% of the total hospital beds are available (compared to 35.5% last week).
- 3,118 South Dakotans have died from COVID: 2 new deaths reported this week vs. 1 in the previous week. The two deaths were in people aged 60 years or older.

- 102.3 million cases: 441,394 new cases this week vs. 446,074 in the previous week
- 1.11 million total deaths: 2,557 deaths this week vs. 3,247 in the previous week

- 663.0 million cases: 3.84 million cases this week vs. 4.37 million in the previous week
