South Dakota Mortality Data
Deaths through July 2022 have been updated on the South Dakota Department of Health website. Below is a summary of the total deaths in 2020 and 2021 and the average number of deaths per year from 2010 through 2019. Also included are the number of deaths in 2022 and the average number of deaths from January through July from 2012 to 2019.

The graph below shows the total number of deaths from January through July for the leading causes of death from 2012 to 2022. Currently, COVID is the third leading cause of death among South Dakotans in 2022.

Updates:
Brookings County (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 27% vs. 27% last week])
- 8,995 total cases: 27 new cases this week vs. 10 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 11% were under 20 years of age (vs. 30% in previous week)
- 11% were 20-39 years (vs. 20% in previous week)
- 26% were 40-59 years (vs. 40% in previous week)
- 52% were 60 years or older (vs. 10% in previous week)
- 243 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: no new hospitalizations posted this past week compared to none in the previous week. Currently, the percentage of staffed beds that are COVID-occupied in the Sioux Empire region is 4.2% (compared to 4.8% last week). NOTE: Last week the number of Brookings County residents ever hospitalized with COVID was posted on the dashboard to be 244. SDDOH continuously performs quality control on these data and they likely found an error.
- 60 Brookings County residents have died of COVID: 1 death was reported this past week compared to no deaths in the previous week.
South Dakota (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 20-24% vs. 20-24% last week])
- 264,187 cases: 719 new cases this week vs. 631 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
- 18% were under 20 years of age (vs. 15% in previous week)
- 27% were 20-39 years (vs. 20% in previous week)
- 18% were 40-59 years (vs. 18% in previous week)
- 37% were 60 years or older (vs. 47% in previous week)
- 11,898 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 26 were admitted to in-state hospitals this week vs. 38 last week. Of the new hospital admissions this past week:
- 0% were under 20 years of age (vs. 0% in previous week)
- 0% were 20-39 years (vs. 0% in previous week)
- 7% were 40-59 years (vs. 16% in previous week)
- 93% were 60 years or older (vs. 84% in previous week)
- 56 people are currently hospitalized vs. 63 last Wednesday (10 currently in the ICU vs. 11 last week). Currently, the percentage of staffed beds statewide that are COVID-occupied is 2.7% (compared to 3.0% last week).
- 3,059 South Dakotans have died from COVID: 10 new deaths were reported this week vs. 3 in the previous week. Of the new deaths this past week, all were aged 60 years and older.

- 99.1 million cases: 233,507 new cases this week vs. 299,316 in the previous week
- 1.09 million total deaths: 2,252 deaths this week vs. 2,615 in the previous week
