September 28, 2022: COVID Weekly Data Update

The number of cases per 100,000 population in the counties with the ten most populated cities are looking good, except for Hughes County:

The number of new hospital deaths and admissions are also low statewide, although four deaths per week are still too many. 

Updates:

Brookings County (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 15% vs. 32% last week])

  • 8,909 total cases:  20 new cases this week vs. 51 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
    • 15% were under 20 years of age (vs. 18% in previous week)
    • 25% were 20-39 years (vs. 31% in previous week)
    • 20% were 40-59 years (vs. 10% in previous week)
    • 40% were 60 years or older (vs. 25% in previous week)
  • 243 Brookings County residents have been hospitalized with COVID: 2 new hospitalizations posted this past week compared to 0 in the previous week.  Currently, the percentage of staffed beds that are COVID-occupied in the Sioux Empire region is 6.4% (compared to 7.3% last week).
  • 59 Brookings County residents have died of COVID:  no deaths were reported this past week compared to no deaths in the previous week.
  • Only 26% of Brookings County residents have received a booster.

South Dakota (low community level; high community transmission [% test positivity = 14% vs. 17% last week])

  • 261,371 cases: 732 new cases this week vs. 956 in the previous week. Of the new cases this past week:
    • 19% were under 20 years of age (vs. 17% in previous week)
    • 24% were 20-39 years (vs. 25% in previous week)
    • 22% were 40-59 years (vs. 20% in previous week)
    • 35% were 60 years or older (vs. 38% in previous week)
  • 11,768 South Dakota residents have been admitted to in-state hospitals with COVID: 42 were admitted to in-state hospitals this week vs. 39 last week. Of the new hospital admissions this past week:
    • 7% were under 20 years of age (vs. 3% in previous week)
    • 0% were 20-39 years (vs. 15% in previous week)
    • 14% were 40-59 years (vs. 10% in previous week)
    • 79% were 60 years or older (vs. 72% in previous week)
  • 81 people are currently hospitalized vs. 107 last Wednesday (11 currently in the ICU vs. 9 last week). Currently, the percentage of staffed beds statewide that are COVID-occupied is 3.9% (compared to 4.5% last week).
  • 3,021 South Dakotans have died from COVID:  4 new deaths were reported this week vs. 3 in the previous week.  All deaths were in people aged 60 years and older.

USA

  • 97.9 million cases:  396,808 new cases this week vs. 393,980 in the previous week
  • 1.08 million total deaths:  3,080 deaths this week vs. 2,863 in the previous week

Worldwide

  • 621.1 million cases: 2.94 million cases this week vs. 3.52 million in the previous week
  • 6.54 million deaths: 9,069 deaths this week vs. 13,258 in the previous week
