December 17, 2020 COVID Data Report

Here are some graphs using data posted by South Dakota Vital Records and Department of Health (https://doh.sd.gov/statistics/). As shown below, since July of 2020 both the absolute number of deaths and the deaths per 100,000 are quite a bit higher than any year since 2010.  The third slide shows the number of deaths by cause and year (deaths in 2020 are only through October).  I will update them as more data are posted by Vital Records and DOH.

Plotting the rates vs. raw numbers (below) reduces some of the variability resulting from changes over time in population size of South Dakota.
According to the 2020 provisional death data through October, COVID-19 is currently the third leading cause of death.

The CDC has some great recommendations on things to consider during the holiday season: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays/winter.html

Be safe.
